Personal Narrative

I've always loved writing -- the feeling of starting with an idea, brainstorming and watching it grow into something meaningful. It's how I express myself and make sense of the world. I always knew English was where I belonged, yet I wanted something more than just your average classroom with books to read and essays to write. The I found journalism and everything changed.

When I first joined my high school newspaper, The Redwood Bark, I didn't realize how much it would shape me. I discovered a mix of storytelling, photography, leadership, and editing that push me creatively and personally. In the beginning, I had difficulty with my time management, causing me to feel behind in my work. But with each cycle, I welcomed feedback, put systems into place to stay organized and continued to strengthen my storytelling voice. Being part of the Bark has opened my eyes to the power of stories -- how they connect people and change perspectives. It's taught me to look at the world through a wider lens and to use my voice with purpose.

When I was younger, I wanted to be everything. Photographer to illustrator, even a professional soccer player. Now I just want to make a difference. Journalism lets me do that. It's more than writing; it's about impact, truth and empathy. So, when people ask me what I want to be, I say journalist because that is the first thing that has allowed me to feel like I have made an impact in and out of the classroom.
